Who Needs a DSC on the Income Tax Portal?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key that certifies the identity of the holder. On the Income Tax portal, its use is mandatory for specific categories of taxpayers to ensure the authenticity of filed documents.

Mandatory Users

The use of a DSC is compulsory for the following:

Corporate Entities: All Companies (Private Limited, Public Limited) and Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs).
Tax Audit Cases: Individuals, professionals, or businesses whose accounts are required to be audited under Section 44AB of the Income Tax Act.
Political Parties: Filing of returns by political parties must be authenticated via DSC.
Authorized Signatories: Any representative signing on behalf of a mandatory category.

Optional Users

For other taxpayers, including most individuals and HUFs (Hindu Undivided Families), the use of a DSC is optional. These users can instead verify their returns using the Electronic Verification Code (EVC) via Aadhaar OTP or Net Banking.

Type of DSC Required

Class 3 DSC: This is the current standard required for Income Tax filing. It provides the highest level of assurance and is stored in a secure USB token (dongle).
Validity: Ensure the certificate is active and has not expired before attempting to sign.

How to Register a DSC on the Income Tax Portal

Before you can sign your Income Tax Return (ITR), you must register your certificate on your e-filing profile:

Login: Visit the official portal at https://www.incometax.gov.in and log in using your PAN and password.
Navigate to Profile: Go to My Profile from the dashboard and select the Register DSC option on the left sidebar.
Install Utility: Download and install the emSigner utility (or the latest "ITD e-Filing DSC Management Utility") provided on the page. Ensure the utility is running as an Administrator.
Connect Hardware: Plug your USB token into the computer.
Selection: Select the provider and the specific certificate from the dropdown menu.
Authentication: Enter your USB token password/PIN and click Register.

How to Use a DSC While Filing ITR

Once your DSC is successfully registered, you can use it during the final stage of return submission:

When prompted to verify your return, choose the Verify using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) option.
Ensure the DSC management utility is running in the background.
Select your registered certificate from the list.
Enter the token password/PIN.
Click Sign to complete the submission and generate your acknowledgment.
